Job Description: Job SummaryAs an inspiring, forward-thinking and highly skilled creative leader, the Art Director, Visual Storytelling has a demonstrated ability to create and present a compelling point of view and also use it to influence, educate, and inform partners. They are comfortable with leading through ambiguity, and resourceful.The Art Director, Visual Storytelling, serves as the principal visual lead, translating the vision of UCSF’s brand through visual storytelling across owned and earned media and a wide variety of channels. They have significant responsibility to set the visual tone for UCSF’s brand and a passion for delivering compelling visual narratives that resonate emotionally with audiences. They work hands-on (and partner with other department creatives and senior communications partners) to conceive, create, guide, and manage a robust visual content calendar that supports UCSF’s enterprise needs, the Office of Communications’ (OOC) goals and strategic initiatives.This position reports to, and serves as the deputy for the Creative Director, Enterprise Brand. The Art Director leads, directs, and manages a cross-functional team of at least three full-time creative FTEs plus freelance photographers and videographers. They shape objectives, lead and/or guide concept development through to final deliverables and experience. Their primary area of purview covers photography, video, and motion graphics, as they experiment, enhance, and innovate how UCSF conveys its brand promise across stories.The Art Director, having in-depth creative experience, operates at the highest level of visual communications expertise to develop and manage visual products and policies; responsible for organization-wide creative communications for audiences that are broad and highly influential. The Art Director role requires a deep understanding of the audience and visual communication strategies/methods. Projects and/or programs can be complex or ambiguous, with campus and/or medical center-wide impact, or a high degree of consequence of error. This position solves complicated communications issues, where analysis of situations requires in-depth knowledge of communications media, and associated technical applications. The Art Director serves as a resource within the OOC organization in matters involving all visual communications needs, managing the creative team which could include design, illustration, video, and photography.The Art Director is a generous and collaborative leader who can create alignment in a decentralized, matrixed environment, and can influence outcomes by means of vision, credibility, and domain expertise independently of positional authority. - Create, guide, and oversee visual narratives to build compelling stories of impact in a deadline-driven environement
- Art direct, commission, and curate a rich resource of UCSF brand iconic imagery
- Oversee broad video and multimedia program that serves editorial and leadership priorities
- Foster collaboration with cross-enterprise creative partners to leverage and expand visual assets for enterprise-wide use
- Engage with creatives, cross-collaborators, and partners to best convey UCSF’s story and brand impact across owned and earned media; and in support of marketing initiatives, sometimes under tight deadlines
- Assess when to leverage internal resources and when to engage external creative partners to optimize deliverables and maximize available budget
- Lead, manage, and mentor dedicated team of visual storytelling creatives
- Build, manage, and negotiate usage rights for a roster of freelance photographers, videographers, multimedia creatives
- Build workflows to support and address wide-ranging needs from within the department and key partners
- Manage and promote a searchable digital asset database of iconic UCSF imagery and b-roll for enterprise-wide use
- Manage photo consenting process for patients in compliance with HIPAA regulations and for non-patients such as staff and students
- Create, update, and promote UCSF brand visual protocols and guidelines to ensure consistent practices across the enterprise
The Art Director recommends changes to policies and practices, both at the department and at the enterprise level. They identify risks and respond accordingly, provide priority setting and workflow analysis. This role analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. They exercise judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action.This job requires an ability to maintain high standards of accuracy and precision under tight deadlines, excellent judgment, creativity, ingenuity, persistence, an ability to actively participate in a highly collaborative, fast-paced, team environment, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills. The candidate is detail-oriented and has a refined eye for good creative, with demonstrated ability to build a powerful narrative through visuals.The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. - Bachelor’s degree in related area and 10 or more years of directly related work experience; and / or equivalent experience / training
- Expert knowledge of all aspects of visual communications, including design and communications concepts, various media and applicable software applications.
- Expert knowledge of production processes for a variety of media and knowledge of vendor requirements for a variety of products.
- Expert knowledge of the trends and developments in the visual communications field.
- Expert visual, design, creative and artistic skills.
