The core focus of the Mian Lab is on understanding the basic biology and treatment resistance mechanisms of prostate and bladder cancer. Candidates who are excited about driving projects and leading teams in applying biochemical and molecular biology tools to investigate clinically relevant questions related to genitourinary malignancies are encouraged to apply. Prior experience with laboratory techniques to interrogate the biology of human, murine and other comparative models systems, bioinformatics, data science, machine learning, and experience with large/complex ‘omics’ data in the field of cancer research are ideal. We also work closely with other solid tumor oncology research teams throughout the Human Biology Division and Fred Hutch. Responsibilities:The Staff Scientist will work closely with members of the Mian lab. They will plan, design, and implement experiments on a variety of projects and perform other tasks as required including:

  • Conduct research independently as well as contribute to research being done by other team members.
  • Address and resolve technical or procedural problems and advise technicians on the interpretation of results.
  • Develop and document new technologies and protocols into the laboratory.
  • Establish laboratory standards and maintain records.
  • Write reports and contribute to scientific publication as warranted by the research.
  • Establish and maintain murine model systems in cooperation with the comparative medicine shared resource.
  • Prepare and update regulatory documents including institutional biosafety and IACUC protocols.
  • Perform analysis of cancer genomes to understand tumor phenotype, progression, evolution, heterogeneity, metastasis, and treatment resistance.
  • Implement analysis tools/pipelines and interpretation of results for coding and non-coding genome alterations, chromosome copy number alterations, genome rearrangements and 3D structure, and mutational signatures.
  • Identify and implement appropriate bioinformatic tools for analyzing sequence data from tumor genomes including long-range sequencing and emerging genomic technologies and advances.
  • Drive the preparation of manuscripts and contribute to research grant applications.
  • Implementation, maintenance, and application of best practices in large-scale data management.

Candidates with strong interest and/or expertise in any of these research areas are highly encouraged to apply

  • Cancer genomics and epigenetics, tumor evolution/heterogeneity, spatially resolved techniques for in-situ tumor and tumor microenvironmental analysis, single-cell omics
  • Application of statistical modeling, algorithm design, artificial intelligence and bioinformatics to study cancer and genetics.
  • Comparative biology using vertebrate or non-vertebrate model systems. Experience with murine tumor model systems is ideal.
  • Analysis of large, complex genome, epigenome or transcriptome data.

Qualifications:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD and/or MD degree(s) in a biomedical science, developmental biology, cancer biology, immunology, or related field.
  • Has completed one or more postdoctoral fellowships in the field of cell and molecular biology or related research fields.
  • At least 5 years of lab experience in cancer research.
  • Publication of peer reviewed articles in the field of cancer research, molecular evolution, or developmental biology.
  • Experience in a variety of molecular and cellular biology techniques, and have strong fundamental knowledge of cancer genetics and epigenetics.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in murine work, high throughput methods, RNA biology, and/or computational biology are highly desirable.
  • Molecular biology techniques, including molecular cloning, nucleic acid isolation, PCR, and protein expression analysis.
  • Experience performing gene transfer studies using lentiviral infection of human cell cultures.
  • Computational processing of RNA and DNA sequencing files.
  • Experience primary and established immortalized cell cultures.
  • Teaching experience in related fields.
  • Expertise in literature review and interpretation of cancer (epi)genomics data.
  • Experience in writing research grant applications.
