Job Description: SUMMARY/OVERVIEWThis position is responsible for installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam-heating, steam generation, hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, circulating pumps, and radiators. Additionally, the Plumber/Pipefitter will be installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility, supply, and disposal system equipment such as sewage, water, oil, gas distribution systems, water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers. They work from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion, and operation of various piping systems and equipment. They install, modify, and repair systems like those described above by setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper pitch and elevation, and determining and installing such things as risers, flexible branches, expansion joints, pumps, gauges, and pressure regulators in the combination needed to support the pressures of the systems and that ensure the proper operation of the systems. The Plumber/Pipefitter also installs equipment like that described above by planning and completing the routing and placement of systems leading to the equipment, determining and placing the equipment at the proper levels and points in the systems, and joining, sealing, and testing systems and equipment for proper pressures, leak-free joints, and operation.PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the maintenance, operation and repair of stationary steam boilers, gas and oil burning equipment, flow meters, draft controls, turbine blowers, water softeners, brining equipment, and ancillary equipment.
  • Lay out and install various kinds of piping, risers, and flexible branches at the proper level and incline; determine the placement and elevation, install steam generators, vacuum/condensate pumps, and radiators; and replace heat exchangers, flash/expansion tanks, and automatic and manual control valves.
  • Plan and lay out the installation, modification, and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment.
  • Repairs boiler fittings including safety valves, regulators, automatic control mechanisms and water columns;
  • Inspects and repairs auxiliary equipment including pumps, draft fans, stokers, and burners. Inspects the steam distribution system and makes minor repairs to the pipes in the steam tunnels. Assists in the operation and maintenance of water wells.
  • Repairs chemical pumps and feed lines, as needed.
  • Fixes timers to regulate chemical feeds.
  • Performs regular maintenance on chemical pumps and lines; rewires motors and timers.
  • Replaces tanks and lines, as needed.
  • Performs routine arc welding.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of four (4) years experience in commercial construction.
  • Prior experience either directly working with boilers or otherwise working in a boiler room environment.
  • State Certification and/or Licensing (Journeyman Plumber, Pipefitters, Oil Burner Technician, NITC Medical Gas Installer ASSE 6010), preferred.
  • Ability to read and follow blueprints and maintenance and operation manuals.
  • Aptitude in math and strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Must be highly skilled in installing and replacing plumbing components in designed built projects.
  • Prior military experience preferred.
  • Valid Driver s License.
  • Travel required.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Certification.

SKILLS

  • Ability to interpret and apply building plans and blueprints, and use shop mathematics to lay out angles, arcs, and circles.
  • Must have skill in any of the accepted trade methods and techniques, for example, figuring pipe, joint, and valve sizes needed to support pressures of systems, aligning pipes, valves, fittings, and joints for accurate match, and installing proper braces and supports to control movement and vibration and allow for expansion and contraction. Additionally, the routing, openings, slant, and level of gas/ water lines, and the location and arrangement of water closets, sinks, and fire sprinkler equipment.
  • Must possess skill in the use of tools and equipment such as sliding squares, measuring tapes, dividers, chalk-lines, plumb bobs, templates, star drills, grinders, flanges, hand and power pipe threaders, cutters, mercury gauges, closet augers, hydrostatic pumps, lead pots and pipe wrenches amongst other tools and equipment
  • Must possess knowledge of how various supply, disposal, utility systems and equipment, such as water, gas systems, fire sprinkler equipment, and water closets, are installed and operate.
  • Must have the ability to plan and lay out the installation and modification of various systems and equipment, for example, the routing, openings, slant, and level of gas and water lines. Additionally, the location and arrangement of water closets, sinks, and fire sprinkler equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical and / or basic construction.
  • Extensive knowledge of construction best practices, equipment maintenance & use, and OSHA guidelines.
  • Advanced working knowledge of tools and equipment used in large buildings that run on boiler systems.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to communicate and report effectively.
  • Good physical condition and stamina.
  • Ability to direct the work of others and make quick decisions.
  • Well-organized and always focused on safety.
  • Deep knowledge of the construction industry and processes.
  • Understanding of use and maintenance of electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Perform quality checks on construction equipment.

The plumber/pipefitter make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. Must be able to move objects and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. Constant movement and use of limbs; this position requires good manual dexterity, coordination and stamina. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands, fingers, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch; talk or hear. The employee must be able to lift up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires good visual acuity and hearing.WORK ENVIRONMENTThe work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. The pipefitters are sometimes required to make installations and repairs in areas where pungent fumes are present. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. Regularly works around moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity.
